James Vernon Dale Sr., 1944

My dad, James Vernon Dale Sr., was photographed in the jungle of Bougainville in April 1944, when he was 40 years old.

  1. was he in the war? I have a zippo lighter from that time period with the inscription
    "Corporal Edwin Goldsmith Jr."
    "From Jim Vernon Dale"

    1. Yes, he was a Navy Seabee. He served in the South Pacific. The lighter information is interesting, although I never heard my father refer to himself as Jim Vernon Dale. His eldest son, James Vernon Dale Jr., was also in the Navy and was in the South Pacific. Both of them were known as Jimmy, although my father signed his name as J.V. Dale. He was never known, to my knowledge, as Jim, nor was his eldest son.
