Yes, he was a Navy Seabee. He served in the South Pacific. The lighter information is interesting, although I never heard my father refer to himself as Jim Vernon Dale. His eldest son, James Vernon Dale Jr., was also in the Navy and was in the South Pacific. Both of them were known as Jimmy, although my father signed his name as J.V. Dale. He was never known, to my knowledge, as Jim, nor was his eldest son.
